President Trump Proves There are Two Sets of Laws

This poster, showing Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona well illustrates the matter of what to do when law enforcement engages in civil disobedience. Should they be treated as any other citizen? Or should there be a higher standard? Image credit: Arizona New Times

Remember when Bill Clinton lied in Federal Court and everyone was in an uproar about it? That was wrong as wrong can be. It is called perjury. In fact, in a court of law, there is really only one other crime which is worse — Criminal contempt. If anyone wondered after the Bill Clinton scandal if there were two sets of laws — one of the common man and another for elected officials, well, that issue is here again.

Joe Arpaio is a Common Criminal, Despite Being a Former Sheriff

I don’t care who you are. If you ignore the order of a court to cease and desist from criminal actions, you cease and desist or face the music. It seemed for a minute (ok, so a couple of months) that former Maricopa County Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio was finally going to hear the piper play. The bully pulpit sheriff who is too full of his own sh*t was convicted of criminal contempt on July 31, 2017. Yea.

I was excited.

Sheriff Arpaio is indicative of everything wrong in law enforcement. Then, he actually had the nerve to thumb his nose at the judiciary. And the judiciary struck back and showed the sheriff that he was not above the law.

That is, until President Trump decided that Arpaio IS above the law. Way to go Mr. Trump. By giving a criminal a pardon — a real criminal, not some junkie hooked on dope getting sent away because he cannot stop, no, you pardoned someone who made a clear and conscious choice to break the law, then ignore a judicial order to stop breaking the law — you have just sent a clear and resounding message to crooked law enforcement the nation over. And you have made the job that much harder on the brave men and women in blue who serve with honor. Bravo sir. Smart. You the smartest of the smart, Sir Mr Trump.

Yep. The Donald is the Smartest.

Blow your horn Donny boy. Beat your chest. Bellow like bullfrog mating. Then be sure to have Sheriff Joe kiss your ring. You are the smartest politician to ever hit Washington. You are the boldest.

I even thought that maybe for all your antics and seemingly crazy stunts you were actually maybe being crafty. And I believed you to be a law and order President despite any misgivings. I guess I thought wrong.

You have just struck a major blow to American jurisprudence. You have just struck a blow to courts the nation over. You have struck a blow to law enforcement nationwide. You have struck yet another blow to community relations. And you have struck another blow to those on the fringe who still kind of believed you may be yet presidential material. And, you have struck another blog to America.

In fact, I wonder just how smart you are…

Why, just the other day when you said you were going to pardon Sheriff Joe, you also said that you were going to build the wall even if you have to shut down America. Um, ‘scuse me sir, but if America shuts down, how will the wall be built? You gonna pay for it?

Last I heard, you don’t make enough money to pay for it yourself and if America is closed, then there will be no America to pay for it. Right?

Hmm. Ok, maybe you’re not that smart.

In any case, I figured you were just kidding. I mean, no one in their right mind would pardon anyone convicted of blatantly ignoring a judicial warning to stop committing a crime. Especially not a Law and Order President.

But you did. And shame on you.

I was holding to the idea that you could still be a good President. I guess I was wrong.

How does it go? Another one bites the dust.
